A toy. e.g. representing an animal or human being, comprises a wheel, that is rotatable in opposite directions by a draw cord, tape or the like and a spring respectively, and means connecting the wheel to a movable member of the toy, e.g. the wing of a bird, whereby rotation of the wheel in at least one direction imparts oscillatory movement to the movable member. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a toy bird has within its body a wheel 4 subject to the action of a spring 16 and provided with a draw cord 6, which extends over an auxiliary wheel 14 and through a window 7, whereby the spring 16 may be tensioned. The auxiliary wheel 14 is connected by cranks 9, 11 and rod 10 to a spindle 12 supporting the wings 13 of the bird and when the free end of the cord is held the toy simulates a bird fluttering upwards or downwards as the cord winds on or unwinds from the wheel 4. The fluttering may be prevented during tensioning of the spring by providing pawl and ratchet mechanism. Alternatively, the auxiliary wheel may be dispensed with and the spindle operated by crank connections from the shaft 5, Fig. 4, (not shown) or by a follower engaging a cam on wheel 4, Fig. 5 (not shown).
