Abstract

688,394. Manure distributers. WHITE, G. J., and KNAPMAN, C. H. April 30, 1951 [May 8, 1950; Feb. 15, 1951], Nos. 11444/50 and 3758/51. Class 6(i) [Also in Group XXX] Relates to manure spreaders of the type described in Specification 595,687, wherein endless screw conveyers 12 feed material to outlets at one end of a wheeled container 8 where it falls on to rotary vaned-discs 96, the screws being mounted in the container so that they continuously engage the upper surface of the material and are lowered automatically as the level sinks. According to this invention, the feed screws are mounted for pivotal movement about an axis A parallel to their axis of rotation. In one form, the screws 12 are mounted on arms 22 pivoted to the end-walls of the container, the drive to the screws being derived from a power take-off on the towing tractor and being transmitted through belts 66 to pulleys 68 coaxial with the axis A and thence transmitted to the feed-screw shafts 14. The feed-screws are of open work construction and are lowered by a winch 28 and cables 24. Rotation of the winch 28 is controlled by a further winch 38 which is connected to the speed-control mechanism 36 described in Specification 641,578, [Group XXIV]. This includes a wheel 42 frictionally rotated by a land-wheel 4 of the machine and connected to the winch 38 through the mechanism 36. The lowering of the feed-screws occurs under gravity but the rate is controlled by the device 36 to prevent the screws from embedding themselves in the material. A handle 40 is used for raising the screws initially. A rotary agitator 84 is mounted above the outlets which are adjustable by sliding doors 104, operable, through cables 108, by a lever 106. The doors have shoots 114 pivoted to their rear edges to direct the discharged material on to the rotary discs 96. The angle of inclination'of the shoots is adjustable so that material may be discharged on to different parts of the discs to vary the extent of spreading. In a modification having a single feed-screw, the levers 22 are mounted on links pivoted to the chassis so that the pivotal axis A is movable.
