Abstract
Copper is extracted from ores, concentrates &c. containing copper sulphide, and may be also copper oxide or carbonate or metallic copper, by subjecting the material to active agitation in finely divided form in suspension in an aqueous solution containing ammonia and ammonium carbonate in the presence of oxygen-bearing gas, e.g. air or oxygen or mixtures thereof, introduced as small bubbles. These should be less than 1/16 inch diameter, and the volume thereof of any moment should be greater than 27 per cent of the volume of the mixture. The air &c. may be introduced through a wall of porous material. A mechanical stirrer may be employed. The ore &c. particles should be finer than 200 mesh per linear inch. The leaching solution contains reactants in proportions corresponding to 3-6 per cent CO2, and 1 1/2 -3 parts total NH3 by weight per part CO2. Ammonia may be added continuously or intermittently during the aeration, if desired, along with the air &c.
