Abstract

An insect-repellent composition comprises one or more alkane diols possessing vicinal hydroxy groups and 7 to 12 carbon atoms in the molecule and, in addition, a known non-solvent insect repellent or insecticide. In place of, or in addition to, the alkane diol there may be used a carboxylic acid ester of the alkane diol, or a halogen substituted derivative of the diol or ester, in which the substituent halogen atom or atoms is or are directly linked to a carbon atom or atoms. Specified diols are 1,2-octane diol, 2,3-octane diol, 1,2-heptane diol, 1,2-undecane diol, 1,2-dodecane diol and their acetates, formates, benzoates, cinnamates and phthalates. Typical known insect-repellents are dimethyl phthalate, a mixture of dimethylphthalate, 2-ethyl hexandiol-1,3 and n-butyl mesityl oxide oxalate, oil of citronella, 2-ethyl hexandiol-1,3 per se, and cyclohexyl cyclohexanol. Specified insecticides are hexachlorocyclohexane, D.D.T., and those of Specification 582,205. A fungicide such as salicylanilide may be present. The compositions may be in the form of solutions in organic solvents or soluble oils, aqueous emulsions, pastes, ointments, solid blocks or dusting powders mixed with e.g. talc and fuller's earth. It is preferred that the diol or ester thereof forms 10 to 50 per cent by weight of the insect-repellent present in the composition. An example is given of an insect-repellent cream consisting of stearic acid, potassium carbonate, secondary alkyl sulphates, glycerol, water and a 1 : 1 mixture of 1,2-octane diol and dimethyl phthalate. The diols may be incorporated in larvicidal oils e.g. diesel fuel oil. The diols may be prepared by the method of Specification 634,118, [Group IV (b)].
