Abstract
687,824. Dishwashing machines. THOR CORPORATION. 'July 19, 1951 [May 4, 1951], No. 17155/51. Class 138 (i). [Also in Group XXXIV] A dishwashing machine comprises a dish rack 26, Fig. 4, mounted in a tub 16, an upwardly open liquid receiving receptacle 40 mounted in the tub below the rack, drive means to rotate the receptacle about a vertical axis at a speed to create a rotating annulus of liquid 42 against the interior wall of the receptacle and a plurality of scoops 72 mounted for rotation about the said axis and having inlet portions 73, Fig. 5, in the path of the liquid annulus to pick up liquid therefrom and outlets 74 for discharging the liquid in upwardly directed sprays, wherein the scoops are freely rotated by the movement of the liquid annulus and have means associated therewith for retarding their rotation to a speed considerably less than that of the liquid annulus. The tub 16 is provided with brackets 30 which rest on brackets 31 on the corner posts of an' enclosing cabinet. Mounted over the top of the tub sump 17 by means of a resilient seal 20 is an annular liquid deflector plate 22. The rack 26 rests on the seal 20 and a reticulated screen 25 rests in the deflector plate. The scoops 72 which are tubular are mounted in the arms of a spider 70 secured to a freely rotatable shaft 80 whilst the receptacle 40 is secured to a sleeve 60 surrounding the shaft 80. An electric motor 54 drives the sleeve 60 through a pulley 56 belt 57 and a double grooved pulley 58. The pulley 58 also drives by a belt 97 and pulley 98 a pump 12 having its inlet connected by a hose to a sump drain (not shown) and its outlet 14 connected by a hose to an external drain. The lower'end of the shaft 80 has secured thereto a brake drum 85 (see also Group XXXIV) which is engaged internally by a pair of lined shoes 90 slidably mounted on a rod 95. and urged 'apart by a spring 96. The shoe assembly is carried by brackets 88 provided with upturned lugs 89 which limit rotation of the shoes relative to the drum. The motor, pump and brackets 88 are all supported from a main channel 50 resiliently carried by connectors 52 from the bottom of the tub. The bottom of the receptacle 40 is provided with a number of arcuate orifices 43 each depressed as at 44. In operation the motor 54 is started and water is admitted from a solenoid or manually operated valve to a funnel disposed on the tub side. This water falls on to the plate 22 which deflects it on to the upwardly inclined central portion of the bottom of the receptacle. This water is then thrown outwardly against the interior wall of the receptacle past the depressed orifices 43 to form the rotating annulus of liquid 42. The size of the annulus is limited by the inwardly directed lip 40a of the receptacle and any excess water is spilled over into the tub sump and is then pumped to drain. The spider is rotated by the annulus at a lower speed than the receptacle owing to the brake mechanism and thus water is forced along the tubes 72 and emitted at high velocity from the nozzles 74 which are spoon-shaped. As will be seen from Fig. 5 the nozzles are arranged at different radial distances from the axis of rotation and by this means the whole cross-sectional area of the dish rack is covered by the sprays as they rotate. When the motor is stopped the water annulus is broken and the water escapes through the orifices 43 to the bottom of the sump 17. The motor may be momentarily restarted to ensure that the pump 12 completely empties the sump. If desired the tub 16 may be mounted in a sink in which case the pump may be dispensed with and the sump drain connected directly to the sink drain so as to empty by gravity. If desired the brake shoes may be secured to the shaft 80 and the drum 85 held stationary, in lieu of the arrangement shown. Specification 629,013 is referred to.
