Abstract
A dried gel catalyst in the form of regular spheroids of predetermined particle size, is prepared by grinding a wet hydrous silica gel, incorporating therewith either before or after grinding a minor proportion of hydrated alumina and/or magnesia, and drying the catalyst to a water content of less than 20 per cent by dispersing a 4-10 per cent aqueous suspension of the ground particles into a current of hot gases at 600 DEG -1000 DEG F, the extent of grinding being such that at least 95 per cent of the wet gel passes a 30 mesh screen, at least 50 per cent passes an 80 mesh screen, while while at least 50 per cent is retained on a 300 mesh screen. The silica gel is prepared by adding sodium silicate solution to dilute sulphuric acid with stirring. Alumina is incorporated by adding aluminium sulphate solution followed by ammonia; magnesia is added in finely ground form. The gel is washed, either before or after incorporating the alumina and/or magnesia, until the alkali metal salt content is reduced to less than 0.1 per cent (as Na2O) on the dry basis. Washing may take place either before or after grinding. The catalyst is suitable for use in a fluidized process for the cracking of petroleum fractions.
