Abstract

A pigment is dispersed in a film-forming-material by agitating the pigment and the film-forming material with sand, glass or hard plastic beads of 20-40 United States mesh size and then separating the sand from the dispersed pigment. Specified film-forming compositions produced are (1) polyvinyl chloride powder, blown castor oil, dibutoxy ethyl phthalate, naphtha, soya lecithin, orthophenyl phenol, ethyl alcohol, stabilizer, cadmium sulphide pigment, and barytes pigment; (2) chlorosulphonated polyethylene (prepared as in Specification 542,414), toluene, ethyl alcohol and barytes; and (3) nitrocellulose, methyl isopropyl carbinol acetate, methyl isobutyl ketone, methyl isobutyl carbinol, isopropyl alcohol, methylethyl ketone, toluene, petroleum naphtha, xylene, blown castor oil, methyl isobutyl carbinol acetate, milori blue and zinc oxide.ALSO:<PICT:0686234/III/1> A pigment is dispersed in a film-forming material by agitating the pigment and the film-forming material with a sand of 20 to 40 United States mesh size and then separating the sand from the dispersed pigment. The term "sand" includes glass and plastic beads. The sand may be present in an amount of 30 to 65 per cent of the total volume which the pigment and film-forming material may be continuously removed from the sand and replaced by new p material. This later process may be carried out by introducing the materials into vessel 1 where they are agitated by impellers 3 to produce a smooth dispersion which passes through screen 5 leaving behind the sand. This dispersion fills jacket 6 and flows from opening 8 at a rate controlled by valve 10. Upper jacket 11 is for a temperature controlling fluid. Modifications of the apparatus include a closed vessel 1, fitting the impellers with vertical bars or baffles and extending the jacket 11 to cover the entire unit including the jacket 6. Specification 542,414 [Group IV], is referred to.
