Abstract

686,051. Earth testing; bridge circuits. HUGHES & CO., Ltd., F. H. Nov. 26, 1951 [Nov. 6, 1950], No. 27107/50. Class 37. In order to test the soil as a preliminary to the installation of cathodic protection for metal structures in the soil against corrosion, a probe is inserted into the soil, which probe has parts of two dissimilar metals insulated from each other and connected to a bridge. The probe comprises a hollow ebonite rod 5, Fig. 1, an insulator block 6, a steel spike 7 and a magnesium alloy ring 8. A metal tube 9 is screwed into the spike 7 at its lower end and passes through a plate 11 at its upper end. A nut 12 clamps the parts 6, 8, 5 between the spike 7 and the plate 11. A terminal head 13 is attached to the plate 11 by screws 14 and has a pair of sockets 15, 16 connected to the ring 8 and spike 7. The assembly 7, 6, 8 is made with a slight taper so that it increases gradually in diameter away from the point and thereby ensures good contact when pushed into the ground. The sockets 15, 16 are engaged by pins 21, 22 carried by an insulating plate 23 and forming a detachable plug. The pins 21, 22 are connected to terminals S1, S2, Fig. 2, on a measuring instrument 26, which comprises a pair of fixed resistances R1, R2, Fig. 2, a variable resistance Rv which is varied by a rotary member 27, and a switch T1. The resistance of the cell formed by the parts 7, 8 in the soil is indicated by the position of'the member 27 when this has been set so that no change in the reading of the galvanometer G occurs when the switch T1 is opened and closed. The switch T1 may be arranged to be operated rapidly by a mechanically driven contactor. The potential between the spike 7 and ring 8 in the ground may also be measured. The spike 7 and ring 8 may be made of metals other than steel and magnesium alloy, e.g. one part may be of magnesium, or magnesium alloy while the other part is made from ferrous metals, brasses, bronzes, copper, copper alloys, aluminium, aluminium alloys, zinc, or zinc alloys.
