Abstract
Apparatus for the treatment of artificial thread with various treating liquids, which are supplied to the thread while supported by the circumferential surface of a roll in a thread storing and advancing reel, includes a wiper body 84 having an inner concave surface corresponding to the curvature of the roll and having means 85 on said surface for removing excess liquid. The thread-contacting rollers 36 ... 39 ... are driven by a gear-wheel 56 which engages gears 54 on the rollers and is driven by a motor M. The gears 54 also drive the annular member 68 upon which the bundle B of filaments 52 is initially formed. The member 68, in a further modification, not shown, is freely supported upon bottom rollers and may be raised by manual means to a position where it is not driven by the rollers 36 ... 39 ... , or lowered into contact with the two top rollers 39, 40 (not shown), by which it is driven, to collect the bundle B. Each roller 36 ... 39 ... is carried by reel end-plates 48, 49 in self-aligning <PICT:0686026/IV (a)/1> <PICT:0686026/IV (a)/2> <PICT:0686026/IV (a)/3> <PICT:0686026/IV (a)/4> <PICT:0686026/IV (a)/5> bearings, held in place by bolts so that the bearings can be unbolted for ready removal of the rollers. The rollers 36 ... 39 ... are each preferably formed with a first conical portion A followed by a longer portion B of more gentle conicity, followed, again, by a portion C of uniform diameter. Towards the delivery end of each roller, a coned-portion D is followed by a section E of uniform diameter; the thread being dried while on portions C and D of the rollers. Treating liquids are delivered to the reel through pipes P, P1, P2, P3 ... and removed from collecting chambers C1, C2, C3, C4 ... by pipes 125, 126, 127, 128 ... such pipes engaging telescopically within pipes 130, 131, 132, 133 ... each formed with a narrowed end so that they may project between and maintain the spacing of adjacent thread convolutions at the lower side of the reel. The pipes 130 ... 133 ... may be carried by a manually operable device so that during threading up of the reel they may be retracted from the lower regions of the thread convolutions. The intermingling of the treating liquids is minimized by fitting between adjacent rollers pairs of wiper shells 84 pressed into contact with the rollers along longitudinal and transverse strips 85, 86, the strips 85 removing excess liquid and the strips 86 separating treating zones. The removed liquid escapes by way of openings 88, 89 which may be furnished with spouts. The pressure between the wiper shells 84 and the rollers is obtained, in one modification, from spring bars 94 separated by spacing members 95.
