Class 52(v) [Also in Groups XIX and XX] Apparatus for use in the longitudinal levelling of railway tracks comprises a mirror f, Fig. 1, adjustably mounted relative to a clamp a which may be secured to one of the rails R of the track. The U-shaped clamp a provided with a spring clip b riveted thereto, has a handle h to balance the weight of the mirror and a tube c in which one end of an angled rod e is secured by thumb screw d. The opposite end of rod e is fastened in a similar tube c<SP>1</SP> fixed to the back of mirror or mirror frame f, which is protected by a hinged cover g, a nut m preventing complete removal of the mirror. In a modification, the clamp may be provided with a screw for engaging the rear surface of clip b, and mirror f may be mounted on a universal joint such as a ball and socket joint and locked in position by a grub screw or by frictional or resilient means. In a further embodiment, Fig. 7, for use in longitudinal and cross-levelling and gauging; (see Groups XIX, XX), a straight-edge 20 of wood or light metal has a clamp 21 secured at one end for engagement with the head of one rail 22, a winged screw 27 being provided in one limb of the clamp for bearing on a spring 26. A bracket 30 supports in a similar manner to the embodiment of Fig. 1, an angled rod 31 carrying a mirror 33. Brackets such as 30 may be provided on either side of the straight-edge or a single one 30b may be mounted on the top of member 20 and a similar arrangement may be provided at the opposite end of the straight-edge.
