Abstract

685,723. Making metal fabrics. ROSS, O. Z., NORMAN, H. H., and SKLAR, H. B., (trading as ZIG ZAG SPRING CO.). July 7, 1950, No. 17058/50. Class 83 (iv). Corrugating; angular bending; shearing adjuncts.-In a machine for bending wire into sinuous form the wire is guided by pins 84, 85 on an oscillating head 67 to be bent by pins 42, 43 on an oscillating member 39 and a retaining-pin 158 movable towards and away from the bending pins and in and out of the plane of oscillation thereof in synchronism with the movement of the bending pins engages consecutively the convolutions of the wire to allow of overbending. As shown in Figs. 33, 35, 37, the pins 42, 43 overbend the convolution whilst the wire is held by the pin 158. The pin 158 is withdrawn and the movement of pins 42, 43 reversed and guide pins 84 lowered to allow the pin 42 to pass the bend. Pin 43 then contacts a bend to feed the wire forwards and pins 42, 43 make a reverse bend and retainer pin 158 is advanced to hold the wire during overbending. The bending pins 42, 43 are mounted on a member 39 on a shaft 33 with pinion 32 engaging a rack 33 on a frame 28 oscillated on rods 29, 30 by a crankslider mechanism from a shaft 10. A pinion 14 on the shaft 10 rotates a shaft 16 with crank slider mechanism 56, 58 oscillating a frame 58 on rods 60, 61. A rack 59 on the frame engages a gear 68 meshing with a similar racked frame 67 oscillated on rods 76, 77. The frame 67 carries the guide-pins 84, 85 which are oscillated in synchronism with the bending pins. Wire is bent to sinuous form by the oscillation of the bending pins and the movement of the pins 84, 85 prebends the next convolution, Fig. 33. The pinion 14 rotates a shaft 18 driving a crank 128 connected by a rod 129 to a cross-head carrying shafts 136, 137 on which a housing 150 is mounted. Rotation of the shaft 18 reciprocates the housing 150 in which the retainer pin is mounted, the pins being raised in opposition to pressure of a spring 159 by anchored pivoted rods 165 turning a shaft carrying lifting lugs. The sinuous wire is fed between a roll 272, Fig. 15, and a screw-adjusted anvil 275 to bend each convolution out of the plane of the sinuous wire. A punch is reciprocated through a onerevolution clutch to sever the wire and a V- shaped blade straightens the end of the cut wire, Fig. 16 (not shown). The machine is controlled by a lug on a chain driven from the shaft 180 closing a timing switch, Fig. 25, not shown, to cause stoppage of a feed wheel on the shaft 180 and operation of a one-revolution clutch for the shear.
