Abstract

685,711. Tumbling barrels. VERE HOLDINGS, Ltd. March 29, 1950, No. 7911/50. Addition to 663,581. Class 60. The interior of a barrel for barrel-polishing has a closed, smooth, wholly curved non-circular cross-section in the planes containing the axis of the barrel, and the barrel is rotated about an axis which is inclined at a small angle to the axis of the barrel. The barrel is made in halves 45, each half being a semi-ellipsoidal casting of cast iron or light alloy lined with rubber 46; the halves have strengthening webs 49 and flanges 47 which are bolted together to form the barrel. Spindle bosses 48 are cast integral with the halves, the line joining the bosses making an angle of 16“ degrees with the major axis of the ellipsoid. The spindles 43 are carried by self-aligning ballbearing plummer blocks 42; one spindle is driven through sprocket and chain 55 by a variable speed motor 56. The barrel has a charging aperture closed by a hinged lid 50. Below the barrel is an unloading shoot 60 which is rubberlined.
