Abstract

685,655. Riveting. GOODRICH CO., B. F. Aug. 9, 1950 [Dec. 1, 1949], No. 19787/50. Class 83 (iv). [Also in Group XXV] The head of a tubular rivet initially has an outer margin spaced from the front of the work and a portion inwardly of the margin in contact with the front of the work, this head, during riveting, being reformed so that its undersurface lies against the work, the shank of the rivet being simultaneously bulged outwardly at the back of the work to set the rivet. An internallythreaded tubular rivet of ductile material, e.g. aluminium, brass, or steel, the head of which is initially of the countersunk type, is screwed on to the end of a draw-rod 14 and inserted, together with the draw-rod, in the work 21, 22. When the rod is operated to upset the shank portion 17 the head 11 is received in a concave recess 26 in the set 16, made of hardened steel or the like and slidable on the draw-rod, and is bent over to assume the position shown in Fig. 2. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the recess in the set is in the form of a truncated cone.
