A grinding machine comprises one or more grinding wheels, a reservoir for liquid coolant, and a lid covering the reservoir, the grinding wheel or wheels being supported on the lid and arranged so that they are cooled by the coolant during rotation and the lid being secured relative to the reservoir so that it can be moved to uncover the reservoir. A machine for edge grinding optical lenses has two rectangular cast metal bases 10, 11 fixed end to end; the base 10 supports a diamond impregnated grinding wheel 13 for fast cutting and a carborundum wheel 14 for finishing. The base 10 is a hollow box serving as a reservoir for cooling water and has a lid 15 hinged at 16; bearing members 19 on the lid 15 carry a shaft on which the grinding wheels and an intervening spacer 17 are mounted. An electric motor 12 fixed to the base 11 drives the shaft through a rubber belt 22 provided with a guard 24 hingedly supported at one end by a bracket 25 and resting at its other end on a support 26. The lid 15 has a rim 15b which is raised at the front to form a hand rest for an operative holding lenses against the wheels. The upper parts of the wheels are enclosed by a housing 20; the lower parts project into the reservoir through a recess 15a in the lid; the recess extends for a short distance in front of the wheel housing to form a drain hole for any cooling water which gathers on the lid 15, the latter being sloped toward this hole to facilitate drainage. The rear of the housing 20 is carried down into the reservoir for a short distance to carry water collected on the inside of the housing 20 into the reservoir, The wheels do not touch the water in the reservoir but take up cooling water from a sponge 28 fixed to the underside of the lid in contact with the wheels and dipping into the water. The front of the lid is clamped by a finger nut 27 to its base 10; to clean out or refill the reservoir or to replace or adjust the sponge the nut 27 is loosened and the lid tilted back on its hinges, the driving belt 22 becoming slack to discontinue the drive and the belt guard 24 sliding on its rear support 26; the underside of the lid may carry a prop 29 to hold it raised.
