Abstract
A machine for spinning rayon and other artificial filaments comprises an extrusion device, means for metering a spinning liquid thereto, a positively driven godet disposed above the extrusion device and adapted to withdraw from it one or more continuous filaments, a filament-advancing after-treating and/or packaging device, the extrusion device being horizontally spaced from the after-treating and/or packaging device so as to provide a free passageway therebetween suitable for the movement of an operator, and a pair of horizontally spaced members adapted to guide the filament or filaments withdrawn from the extrusion device to the after-treating and/or packaging device overhead relative to the passageway, means being provided for preventing drippings from the filaments from falling in the passageway. There may be a number of extrusion devices arranged side by side and a number of after-treating and/or packaging devices similarly arranged, each extrusion device being arranged with respect to its corresponding after-treating and/or packaging device as described above. As shown, the filaments are extruded from the spinneret 28 immersed in a coagulating bath 29 and are withdrawn from the bath by the positively driven godets 32 through the guide members 33 and trough 34 extending between the godets. The trough catches drippings from the yarn, and may have a yarn treating liquid circulated through it. Each guide member 33 is mounted on a vertical rod 43 terminating at its lower end in a handle 44, the rods 43 being slidably supported in bracket members 46 mounted on the overhead frame member 30. The guides 33 are thus arranged to be vertically movable between positions at a higher level than the upper peripheries of the godet 32 and positions within the trough 34. The filaments then pass to an after-treating and drying arrangement comprising a pair of driven cylinders 50 and 51 upon parts of which treating liquids are sprayed from the conduits 63 and which are partly surrounded by the drying chamber 65. Finally the filaments pass to one or other of the bobbins 74 of the automatic winding and doffing mechanism 17. In modifications: (1) an additional positively driven godet is interposed between the coagulating bath and the first of the pair of overhead godets, and (2) the <PICT:0685526/IV (a)/1> filaments are after-treated and dried on one or two endless foraminous belts. The troughs of the overhead guide system may be hinged along their inner edges to the godet drive gear-boxes in order to facilitate the lapping of the overhead godets by the filaments during the threading-up operation. In two other modifications the drip troughs over the passageway are shown steeply inclined, either the godet over the coagulating bath or the other of the pair of godets guiding the filaments over the passageway being at a higher level. In a further modification the filaments are withdrawn from the spinnerets by means of a positively driven godet positioned directly above the spinning trough, and from this godet the filaments pass over a pair of hook-shaped thread guides which are supported above the godets and the after-treating cylinders respectively from an overhead cross member; these guide the filaments over the passageway. A drip trough may be positioned below the thread between the thread guides, but in this case the first guide may remove sufficient bath liquid from the yarn to prevent drips from falling in the passageway. U.S.A. Specifications 2,225,638 and 2,416,534 are referred to.
