685,269. Coating with metals. NATIONAL RESEARCH CORPORATION. Feb. 2,1951, No. 2583/51. Class 82(ii) In apparatus for coating with metal, and in particular with aluminium, by vaporization in vacuo, the crucible containing the molten metal is arranged so that its upper part is raised to a higher temperature than the body of the crucible, in order to prevent molten metal creeping out of the crucible. As shown, the vacuum chamber 10 is evacuated by a pump 14 and molten metal is evaporated from a crucible 24 surrounded with refractory and electrically insulating material. High frequency electric currents in the coil 32 heat the crucible and the closer spacing of the section 36 of the coil raises a lip 28 of the crucible to a higher temperature, increasing the rate of evaporation and thus preventing the creep of molten metal out of the crucible. A strip 20 to be coated is locatesd above the crucible.
