A lift of the paternoster type comprises a pair of endless conveyer chains and cabins connected thereto at diagonally opposite points such cabins being guided by vertical rails in which the vertical rails extending parallel to the chains have a curved profile and each cabin is provided with at least four spaced guiding shoes embracing the adjacent side only of the rails. The cabins are mounted on chains passing round a pair of upper pulleys 11, 14 and a pair of lower pulleys 12, 15 displaced from each other in vertical planes so that a cabin is connected to both chains. Guides 22, 23 are connected with the floors 25 by devices 24 and have a central guide 27, 28 with end pins 30, 31. The cage, Fig. 7, has four side shoes 40 which engage the rails 22, 23. The top of the cage has a flap and the bottom a hinged part and extending member with a slot for negotiating the turns. The members 19, 20 connecting the cabin to the chains are connected by a cross member 49. The drive, Fig. 9, carried by the frame 21 comprises a motor 51, worm gears 52, 53, and pinions 55, 56, 57, 58, 60 and 61. The pinion 56 drives the pulley 11 and the pinion 61 drives the pulley 14. The pinions are enclosed in casings 64 and 65. Each guiding rail is composed of sections joined to one another by pins or by bolts. A greased insulating shaft 48 is interposed between each guiding shoe and cabin wall.
