Abstract
685,246. Communication cables. TELEGRAPH CONSTRUCTION & MAINTENANCE CO., Ltd. Oct. 17, 1951 [Oct. 17, 1950], No. 25316/50. Class 36. A communication cable comprises a plurality of conductors C, each insulated with polythene P and twisted together in pairs or quads with varying lengths of lay, and an outer insulating sheath 4 which is sufficiently tight to maintain the conductors in their relative positions and ensure electrical stability. The sheath 4 is preferably of polythene or polyvinyl chloride, and may be surrounded by copper or aluminium screening tapes 5. Protective layers of thermoplastic material or bituminized paper 6 and compounded hessian 7, armouring 8 and impregnated jute 10 complete the cable. Air spaces are left between adjacent pairs or quads and may contain bare copper conductors 11 which are connected to operate a warning device should water enter the cable. The individual core coverings P may be of different colours for identification purposes, and may consist of materials other than polythene which have suitable properties. The polythene sheath 4 may have carbon black incorporated therein to prevent deterioration.
