Abstract

685,067. Electromagnetic sound-recording apparatus. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., WEIR, D. A. and GORDON, K. S. Oct. 22, 1948 [Oct. 24, 1947], No. 5579/50. Divided out of 685,032, [Group XL(b)]. Class 40 (ii) [Also in Group XL(b)] In equipment comprising a tape for the recording and reproduction of electric signals and driving means for drawing the tape past recording and reproducing heads, the tape is fed by the driving means into a container having a width only slightly greater than that of the tape, is stored therein in the form of a plurality of loops, each loop comprising one or more folds of the tape, and is withdrawn therefrom by the driving means without interference between the different loops. The tape 3 is preferably of magnetic material or is formed of a substance, such as polymerized vinyl chloride, in which magnetic material is embedded, and is drawn by a driving roller 7 and its associated pressure roller 8 past the recording head 1 and a wipe-out head 4. The stored loop 10 of the tape is drawn past the reproducing head 2 by a roller 11, and stored as a separate bight. The tape can be fed reversely by a roller 18. When the reproducing head 1 is in operation independently of the recording head 1, and the tape becomes taut, a spring-biased arm 9 moves the roller 8 away from the roller 7 so that the tape can be drawn through the heads 1, 4. If the tape feed is obstructed in its passage to the reproducing head or to the recording head, the arm 9 or an arm 32 respectively closes contacts 13, 15 operating an alarm circuit. A break in the tape is detected by rollers 16, 17 arranged to complete an operating circuit for the alarm.
