Abstract
A soap powder made from a mixture comprising molten soap and sodium carbonate is mixed with not more than 15 per cent by weight of finely-divided calcium carbonate. The calcium carbonate may be mixed with a diluent to improve its uniformity of dispersion before being mixed with the soap powder. The preferred diluent is sodium carbonate. Naturally occurring minerals such as limestone or calcite or minerals containing calcium carbonate may be used. The activity of the calcium carbonate may be enhanced by grinding or other mechanical treatment and, if desired, the calcium carbonate and diluent may be mixed and ground together. Preferably 1-10 parts of sodium carbonate are mixed with 1 part of calcium carbonate and ground, the ground mixture being added to the soap powder so that the final composition contains up to 2 parts calcium carbonate for 100 parts soap powder. The ground calcium carbonate/diluent may be sieved on to the soap powder. The soap content may be between 20 and 80 per cent of the powder, preferably from 15 to 40 per cent, while the sodium carbonate content may be between 10 and 50 per cent Other substances such as silicates and per-compounds may be present in the powder, but compounds which will hinder the precipitation of the hardness of the water by the sodium carbonate, such as sodium pyrophosphate, should not be included. In an example a soap is made from a fat charge consisting of 85 per cent palm oil and 15 per cent palm kernel oil, and 69.5 per cent of the soap base containing 70 per cent anhydrous soap is mixed with 16.8 per cent anhydrous sodium carbonate, 12.1 per cent 80 DEG Tw. sodium silicate (neutral) and 1.6 per cent water. The mixture is sprayed to form a powder, screened to remove that portion passing a 60 mesh/inch sieve, and 100 parts of the screened powder then mixed with 10 parts of precipitated chalk. Other examples are given. Specification 607,274, [Group I], is referred to. The Provisional Specification refers also the use of ground felspar, fluorspar, magnesium fluoride and aluminium silicate in place of calcium carbonate.
