684,090. Removing or inserting engine cylinder sleeves. CHICAGO PNEUMATIC TOOL CO. Feb. 22, 1949 [April 7, 1948], No. 4794/49. Class 61 (iii). A device for removing or inserting an engine cylinder sleeve 22 comprises an hydraulically operated piston 32 working in a cylinder 31 and secured to a bushing 47 which may be fitted either in the end of the sleeve or in a skirted member 51 engageable with the engine block, the cylinder having attached thereto pull rods 36 slidable in the bushing and secured to a plate 39 located within the sleeve. The plate 39 is adapted to receive either a puller assembly 61, Fig. 2, for removing the sleeve or a crank shaft hook 86, Fig. 12, for use during insertion thereof. The assembly 61 is screwed to the plate 39 and comprises a holder 62 having an enlarged head 63 with a large peripheral opening in which puller segments 65 spring-urged outwardly into engagement with the end of the sleeve, are radially adjustable. A plate 72 slidable on the holder 62 and spring biassed away from the head 63 has attached thereto push rods 76 slidable in apertures in the plate 39, and pins 71 for radially retracting the segments 65. The sleeve is withdrawn from the engine block by moving the work cylinder 31 outwards to the left by means of a foot controlled pump. On completion of the pulling action the push rods 76 contact the bushing 47 whereupon the pins 71 ride on inclined surfaces on the bottom of slots in the periphery of the segments 65 and release the latter from engagement with the inner end of the sleeve 22. The withdrawn sleeve drops. into the skirted member 51. For inserting the sleeve 22 into the engine cylinder (Fig. 12) the assembly 61 is replaced by the hook 86 which is. adapted to fit about a large or small part of the crank shaft. The bushing 47 is fitted into the end of the sleeve 22 and the latter is pushed into the engine cylinder by moving the piston 32 outwardly of the working cylinder.
