Abstract

683,778. Compound sheet materials; coating webs. SERRA, J. DUARRY-. June 27, 1950. [July 1, 1949] No. 16057/50. Class 140. Laminated belting or the like is made by separately impregnating a number of bands of woven fabric with an aqueous dispersion of rubber, gutta percha, balata, or synthetic rubber, combining the impregnated bands into a single belt, and piercing the belt by means of a plurality of piercing members, which, after having pierced the belt enter into a further quantity of the rubber or like dispersion and on withdrawal, pick up threads of dispersion and draw them through the belt. The impregnated bands may be treated with carbon dioxide before being combined to form a belt, and the latex mixture may contain hexamethylenetetramine. As shown, bands 1, Fig. 1, of woven fabric are drawn from rolls .2 through tanks 3 containing latex, past distributers 6 which supply carbon dioxide from a container 5, and are united into a belt between a scraper 7 and roller 8. The belt, before passing over a table 10, is subjected to the action of punches or spikes 11 carried by a rotating roller or, as shown, mounted for vertical reciprocation by a crank 12. The punches or spikes perforate the belt and enter into rubber latex in a trough 13. On withdrawal of the spikes latex is drawn through the perforations in the form of threads, any surplus latex wiped off from the spikes falling back into the trough. The belt then passes under a scraper 14, and over a heated table 15 which dries the lower surface of the belt while its upper surface is dried by infra red lamps 16. The belt is additionally acted on by pairs of squeeze rolls 20 and 21, and, if desired, by air from a compressor 19 and carbon dioxide from a container 18. Further treatment of the belt includes passage over rollers 22 to 25 heated to successively increasing temperatures, over a guide roll 30, and between pairs of rolls 31 and 32 of which rolls 32 are driven faster, before being wound on a drum 35. The fabric-treating tanks 3 each have a guide roller 40, Fig. 3, at the inlet end, a guide 48 under which the fabric passes to ensure immersion, and a bent-over portion 41 at the exit end which co-operates with an adjustable scraper 4. Specifications 426,988 and 548,409 are referred to.
