Abstract

683,503. Claw clutches. MAYBACH, K. Sept. 21, 1950 [March 21, 1950], No. 23227/50. Class 80 (ii). In a dog clutch having axially movable and rotatable clutch halves, the halves having dogs with bevelled faces to assist in interpenetration when the speeds of the halves are equal, the clutch halves carry coacting balking dogs and counter dogs respectively, the balking dogs being resiliently urged to a position displaced relative to their associated coupling dogs by an amount less than half the angular pitch of the coupling dogs on the side thereof remote from their bevelled faces, the balking dogs and the counter dogs each having a bevelled face, the arrangement being such that when one clutch half rotates relatively to the other half the bevelled faces of the balking dogs and counter dogs engage and repel the clutch halves from one another, and when the relative speeds of the halves are reversed the flanks of the balking dogs and counter dogs engage and the balking dogs are rotated relatively to its clutch half to permit engagement of the coupling dogs. As shown in Fig. 1 one clutch half 1 is formed with its dogs 2 which are adapted to engage complementary dogs 4 on the other clutch half formed as a sleeve 3 axially displaceable on a shaft 5. Splined to the half 1 is a disc 15 having projections 16 against which bear spring-urged pins 19 housed in bores in projections 11 on a rotatable ring 9 having the balking dogs 10 which project by an amount 26 from the dogs 2. The inner portions of the dogs 4 form the counter dogs co-operating with the balking dogs 10. The dogs 2, 4, 10 have the bevels 22, 23, 24, Fig. 6. The arrangement is such that if the dogs 2, 10 rotate relatively to the dogs 4, the latter urge the dogs 10 into alignment with the dogs 2 against the action of the springs 20 so that the dogs 4 enter the gaps between the dogs 2. If however the dogs 4 rotate relatively to the dogs 2, 10, engagement is resisted by engagement of the bevels 24 with the bevels 22, 23. In a modification the dogs 10 rotate with the axially displaceable dogs 4 instead of with the dogs 2. In a further modification, Figs. 7 to 11 (not shown), the bevels on the dogs 1, 4 are each formed of two portions with different inclination. In another modification, Figs. 12 to 14 (not shown), the invention is applied to a one way clutch.
