Abstract

A method of smelting an oxidic zinciferous ore with solid carbonaceous reducing material in an electric arc furnace produces a substantially zinc-free molten slag and zinc vapour, which can be condensed to massive molten metal, and is characterized in that a body of slag is heated in direct contact with an electric arc struck from an electrode terminating above the upper surface of the slag, the temperature of the slag not exceeding 1450 DEG C., a charge is introduced into the furnace comprising zinciferous ore, iron oxide and an amount of reducing material sufficient to reduce all the zinc oxide and to reduce such an amount of iron oxide that a body of molten iron underlying the slag is produced and the slag contains 1.5-6 per cent of iron oxide, the charge being so introduced in the form of a mass of loose particles as to form a sloping bank which terminates at the surface of the slag out of direct contact with the arc, smelting heat being communicated to the charge by its contact with the slag and by radiation from the arc. The charge is desirably preheated to at least 500 DEG C. and preferably at least 800 DEG C. Specifications 601,246, 601,247, 620,244, 648,529 and 657,205 are referred to.
