Classes 72 and 82(i) In a process for the production of metal powders by thermal decomposition of metal carbonyls in a heated container, part of the metal being entrained by the carbon monoxide formed, an additional current of gas, preferably carbon monoxide, is introduced, thus increasing the amount of metal powder entrained by the gases. As shown, a metal carbonyl is led into a heated chamber A through a pipe C and decomposed into metal powder and carbon monoxide. Additional carbon monoxide is led through a pipe E into the bottom of the chamber and deflected downwards by a cone F. The gases and entrained powder escape through a pipe G into a separator H which may be consecutively arranged filters, deflecting or baffle plates, or magnetic or electric separators, and the separation may be in a plurality of stages. The additional carbon monoxide may be at such temperature that it will effect cooling of the metal powder and the carbon monoxide formed by decomposition.
