Abstract
In the low-temperature polymerization of mono-olefins, e.g isobutylene and iso-octene, alone or with multi-olefins, e.g. butadiene, isoprene, dimethyl butadiene, myrcene, dimethallyl, 2-methyl-3-nonyl- and 2-methyl-4-pentyl-butadienes and cyclopentadiene, dissolved in a non-reactive solvent which also dissolves the polymer, e.g. propane, butanes, pentanes, hexanes, light naphtha and carbon disulphide, the feed is led to a circulating polymerization system to which a Friedel-Crafts catalyst is added and wherein conversion is controlled so that the polymer solution is still flowable, and a polymer containing stream taken from the system is passed in counter-current <PICT:0682695/IV (a)/1> heat exchange to the feed to cool the latter and warm the polymer solution to reduce both its viscosity and precipitation of polymer. Monomer-solvent feed from pipe 1 passes through heat-exchangers 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and calcium chloride drier 7 to a polymerization system 9 comprising coolers 11, 12 alternately connected by pipes 14, 15 through a circulating pipe 16 and catalyst injecting nozzle 17 to polymerizing drum 19 and pump 21. A pump 25 withdraws dilute polymer solution to storage drum 26, whence it passes through the heat-exchangers in reverse flow to the feed, and by pipe 27 through a preheater 28 to drums 29, 38 and associated boilers 36, 41 where most of the solvent and unreacted monomer is vaporized and recovered in still 33. Concentrated polymer solution (15 to 25 per cent of polymer) from drum 38 is delivered by pipe 43, together with steam from pipe 47 and water from pipe 40, to a flash drum 44 provided with a stirrer, where all the volatiles are removed, leaving a slurry of polymer in water which is further purified in drum 73 and withdrawn by pipe 75 to the usual drying and purifying plant. Vapour discharged from the top of drum 44 is condensed at 48, water separating through pipe 51 and liquid hydrocarbons through pipe 52 to fractionating towers from which monomers and solvent are recycled. A slightly modified apparatus for use with higher boiling solvents is also described.ALSO:<PICT:0682695/III/1> Volatile material is removed from a polymer solution (see Group IV(a)) by passing the solution through pipe 43 to flash tank 44 together with a steam jet from line 47 and a water jet from pipe 40 whereby the solution is broken up into droplets.
