Abstract

682,559. Treating pottery. WEDGWOOD & SONS, Ltd., J.. INNES & CO., Ltd., J.K, WEDGWOOD, C. T., INNES, J. K., and GARDNER, A. WILLIAMS-. Sept. 1, 1950, No. 21652/50. Class 87(i) [Also in Groups XXIII and XXX] Apparatus for treating disc-like pottery in the biscuit stage consists of a fixed guide and an endless belt, the articles being rolled along between a portion of the belt and the guide by movement of the belt which co-operates with the guide in gripping the articles at two opposite parts of their rims, and a treatment zone contain, ing a multiplicity of treatment members acting on both disc surfaces of the articles during rolling, the length of the zone and arrangement of treatment members being such that each article is treated throughout at least one complete 'revolution of the article. The endless belt C is passed over pulleys B2, B3, one of which is driven, and over tensioning rollers D mounted on a spring-loaded arm D1. The belt is pressed towards the fixed guide F by rollers E, mounted in pairs on the opposite ends of arms E1 centrally pivoted to the ends of further arms E3 loaded by springs E7 through cranks E4. Plates or dishes H are inserted into the space between the belt and the guide by means of an outwardly curved portion F1 of the guide F. When no plate is present the approach of the belt to the guide F is limited by the spindles of the rollers E engaging a bar secured to the frame of the apparatus. The plates are brushed during conveyance by brushes J. K arranged in pairs of one above and one below the conveying plane of the plates, Fig. 4, adjacent pairs being driven so as to sweep in opposite directions. The bearings of each of the upper brushes J are vertically slidable by means of a handwheel M. In order that the brushes may be easily detached, each has at one end a separate hollow spindle L which rotates in the bearing L1 'and has a squared end for coupling to the end of the brush body N5. The spindle L is locked to or unlocked from the brush body by means of a long bolt N extending through the hollow spindle into threaded nut N1 in the brush body. Bolt N is turned by a tommy-bar N2 which is normally thrust into one of a number of pairs of locking grooves O in the end of hollow spindle L by means of a spring N3, and being manually withdrawn in order to turn the bolt.
