Abstract

682,207. Sulphonates. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP DE BATAAFSCHE PETROLEUM MAATSCHAPPIJ. March 21, 1950 [March 21, 1949], No. 7041/50. Class 2 (iii). Sulphonates are prepared by mixing an olefine hydrocarbon and a salt yielding bisulphite ions in a ratio of from 0.25 to 2 mols. of olefinic hydrocarbon to 1 mol. of bisulphite ion, in from 1 to 5 times the volume of olefinic hydrocarbon of aqueous methyl or ethyl alcohol containing 50-95 per cent (by volume) of the alcohol in the presence of an inorganic oxidizing agent present in an amount of 0.25 to 5 mols. per cent by weight based on the combined mols. of olefinic hydrocarbon and bisulphite ion-yielding compound and heating the mixture to a temperature hot exceeding 200‹ C. Preferably the reactants are mixed in a ratio of 0.5 to 1 mol. of olefinic hydrocarbon to 1 mol. of bisulphite ion. Ethylene or any of its hydrocarbon derivatives which are not conjugated dienes are suitable olefinic startng materials, e.g. propylene, butylene, tertiary amylene, 2-decene, cyclohexene, styrene, cyclopentene, vinyl-naphthalene, 1,4-hexadiene, 1,4- cyclohexadiene and 1-ercoseine. Suitable catalysts are sodium nitrate, sodium nitrate, nitric acid, potassium, lead, calcium, magnesium, cobalt, borium, nickel and silver nitrates and nitrites, sodium chlorate, potassium dichromate and perchloric acid. Suitable compounds for the production of bisulphite ions are sodium and potassium metabisulphite; sodium, ammonium, potassium and lithium bisulphite; sulphurous acid, methylamine bisulphite and calcium bisulphite. In the examples various olefines are treated with sodium metabisulphite in aqueous methyl alcohol solution in the presence of sodium nitrate.
