Abstract
An active substance useful in the treatment of malignant tumours is prepared by treating at 25-35 DEG C. animal blood, serum or milk, undiluted with water, with an excess of substantially non-aqueous water-miscible solvent to precipitate protein bodies containing the active substance; separating the solvent from and drying the precipitate; and dispersing the dried precipitate in a neutral to slightly alkaline physiological common salt solution. The solvent may be absolute alcohol or acetone. The solvent may be separated by centrifuging, the precipitated residue being evaporated in vacuo and then powdered. The final dispersion may be treated with a solid adsorbent such as kaolin, Fuller's earth or Bolus alba, followed by centrifuging to obtain a clear elution containing the active substance. The blood should preferably be taken from female animals during the advanced stages of pregnancy, and the milk from female animals just after parturition.
