Abstract

681,628. Applying tests to photographic films. ERTNAES, O. I. May 30, 1950, No. 13511/50. Class 98 (ii). [Also in Group XVI] A machine for applying a text upon a photographic film whose outer surface has been previously softened comprises means for periodically pressing electros carrying text into the softened film within the borders of the image surface and means for shifting the film forwards for one image length for each periodical pressing, and means is provided for starting and discontinuing the pressing operation in order to replace the text carrying electros without the feeding forwards of the film being stopped or retarded. A photographic film 32, Figs. 1 and 2, is fed stepwise one image length at a time, by an electric motor 57, between an impressionplate 33 and the head 27 of a hollow cylindrical piston 15 working in a cylinder 70. On the head 27 is positioned a text-bearing member which presses the film against the plate 33 when the piston 15 moves upwards. The motor 57 by means of an eccentric 54 oscillates continuously a lever 43 pivoted at 44 and connected at 42 to a lever 35, one end of which abuts against the underside of an inner piston 25 and the other end of which rests against an eccentric 37 whose position is adjustable by a handle 41. A helical spring 23 abuts against the piston 25 and against the end 24 of the piston 15, so as to urge the latter upwards. Two or more helical springs of different lengths and powers may be provided. The lever 35 is pivoted in effect at its point of contact with the eccentric 37, so that the oscillation of the lever 43 causes reciprocation of the piston 25. The vertical position of the pivot 44 is adjustable by a handle 51, and when the pivot is in its lowest position the lever 35 does not move sufficiently to actuate the piston 25, so that the impressing operation takes place only when the lever 51 is moved to the right. The lever 41 controls the amount of pressure applied to the film by adjusting the fulcrum of the lever 35, the desired pressure varying with the nature of the text. Textbearing members 16 in a magazine 1 are urged to the left against a slide 9 by a spring-urged drum 6, wire 5 and rod 4. The slide 9 has an edge 10 which feeds the members one at a time into position on the head 27, and thence to an exit channel 21. The slide is reciprocated by the motor 57 through pinion 64 and gear 14, but since a small portion of the periphery of the latter has no teeth, the slide is only reciprocated once. The gear is re-engaged when the handle 51 is moved to the left, by means of a rod 66, so that when it is desired to change the text, on moving the handle 51 to the left the impressing operation is stopped, and the text-bearing member is changed, the film feed being uninterrupted, so that a few images receive no text. The slide 9 acts through a rod 59 to feed the used text members to the left in the exit channel 21. Heating-means 28 for the text members is provided in the head 27, and further electric heating means in the magazine 1. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifccation. 677,939.
