Abstract

681,179. Carding-engines. DEIRMENTZOGLON, C. A. Dec. 21, 1950 [Sept. 21, 1949], No. 24228/49. Class 120(i) Means for cleaning, card - clothed swift o: roller in a manner simu lating hand-fettling com prises a frame, supported adjacent to the surface o the swift or roller, carry ing a pivotally mounted comb which, by drive means on the frame, is reciprocable in an acurate path of predetermined length and which is so mounted that during it movement in one direction its teeth engage to a pre determined depth between those of the swift or roller and that during movement in the opposite direction it is caused to rock pivotally to a position in which its teeth ride over the surface of the teeth of the swift or roller, the speed of movement of the comb relative to the swift or roller being such as to cause the teeth of the comb to be cleaned at the commencement of each of its return or idle movements. As shown the cleaning mechanism is carried by two spaced plates c, c<SP>1</SP> (not shown) connected together by rods d and pivotally mounted on a rod b detachably supported adjacent the card-clothed swift or roller a in opentopped slots in brackets carried by the machine frame. A comb g is carried pivotally between the ends of two arms f mounted on a rod e which is reciprocated in guideways c<SP>2</SP> through a link n<SP>1</SP>, a lever n and a cam m driven by an electric motor k. The other ends of arms f are connected by a rod h engaging cam slots i so shaped that comb g moves in an acurate path over the surface of roller a. During the downward movement of the comb it is held by an adjustable stop g<SP>1</SP> so that the comb teeth engage with those of roller a. On its upward movement the comb pivots so that its teeth are removed clear of those of the roller. During the early part of the return movement of the comb, the teeth of the roller act to clean those of the comb. The cleaning device rests with a roller r bearing against the surface of roller a. Roller r is rotated by motor k so as to drive roller a at a speed appropriately lower than that of reciprocation of comb g; or roller r may be rotated intermittently so that roller a is stationary during the downward movement of comb g and is given a partial rotation during the upward movement of the comb. The device may be of the full width of roller a, or it may be narower; in the latter case after an annular portion of the card surface has been cleaned the device is moved laterally to an uncleaned portion of the surface, and so on until the full width of the roller has been cleaned.
