Abstract
681,151. Supporting and launching rockets &c. from aircraft.' ROBERT, R. A. March 17, 1949 [May 31, 1948], No. 7304/49. Class 9(ii) Apparatus for releasing suspended rocket-bombs is so arranged that each bomb is suspended from a bomb above it or from a support on the apparatus by co-operation of at least one pin-like member arranged parallel to the longitudinal axis of the bomb and one eyelet member, one of these members being rigid with the suspended rocket and the other with the suspending rocket or support. A box girder 14 is attached by eyelets 10, 11 in bosses 12, 13 to an aeroplane structure, preferably beneath a wing. The girder has an outer wall 15, transverse partitions 16, 17 and end sleeves 18, 19. Within the sleeve 18, a liner 20 having a tapered portion 21 is held in position by a flange 22 at one end and a circlip 23 at the other. The liner has an internal flange 24 engaging a finger 26. The finger has a frusto-conical part 30 engaging the tapered portion 21 of the sleeve and is rigidly con. 8 nected with a yoke 31, Fig. 4, having projecting arms 32, 33, to which are secured pins 34, 35 adapted to support a rocket. The yoke has an inner bearing surface co-operating with a swivel element 37 secured by a shank 38 to a tube 39. The swivel element is held in the yoke by a cross-pin 40. A bushing 43 passing through the tube 39, Figs. 3 and 5, receives the tubular body 44 of an internally threaded nut engaging rod 46 rigid with a ring 47 engaged by a hook 49 pivoting on a pin 50. The hook has an arm 51 engaging a projection on a pivoted lever 53. The lever 53 is actuated by a rod 56 of a jack 57 controlled by the pilot. At the rear end of the tube 39 is a yoke 58 with a rocket-support pin 59 arranged so that its extended axis lies between the pins 34, 35. The yoke 58 is slotted to form jaws 60, 61 internally recessed and screw-threaded to co-operate with a transverse tube 67. A rod 68 held in the tube 67 is rotatably mounted in the arms of a stirrup member 75 at the end of a finger 76 engaging a liner 82 screw-threaded into the sleeve 19. Each rocket has a front collar 85 with loops 88 to engage the pins 34, 35 and a rear collar 86 to engage the pin 59. When rockets are placed one above the other, the collar 85 has pins 91 and the collar 86 has a pin 93 to engage the collars of the rocket below. The swivel mounting of the yoke 31 ensures correct positioning of the pins for engagement with .the loops 88 and fine adjustment of the rocket is made by the nuts 72 and 84. On firing a rocket a retaining pin extending through the pin 59 is sheared by the drive thrust and the rocket is then released. The device may be used to support bombs other than rockets, the bomb being provided with front and rear retaining members (not shown) engaging the sleeves 18, 19. To jettison the rockets' in inert condition the jack 57 is actuated thereby pulling the lever against the action of a spring 53<SP>1</SP> and disengaging the hook 49 which then pivots about its axis to release the tube 39 carrying the rockets. The fingers 29, 76 leave the sleeves 18, 19 and the assembly of tube and rockets falls freely. When the aeroplane carries bombs the arrangement constitutes the normal bomb release.
