Abstract

681,096. Paper and like bags; packaging. VOGT, C. W. May 24, 1949 [June 2, 1948; July 13, 1948; Sept. 4, 1948; Sept. 23, 1948; Sept. 30, 1948; Dec. 23, 1948; Jan. 14, 1949; March 5, 1949], Nos. 13822/49, 13823/49, 13824/49, 13825/49, 13826/49, 13827/49, 13828/49 and 13829/49. Classes 94(i) and 94(ii) A plurality of separate open-mouth bags are interconnected by elements having coatings of thermoplastic, pressure-sensitive or self-sticking adhesive means, not forming an integral part of the bags, at at least one point of each bag adjacent its open mouth and permitting the mouth of the bag to be opened when supported for filling. Fig. 6 shows a chain of bags arranged in pairs A<SP>3</SP>. B<SP>3</SP> on opposite sides of a support-engaging strip C of inverted V section, the free edge of each bag mouth having an adhesive-coated sealing label L. During filling operations the label L may engage guides and cause opening of the bags as they approach the filling point. In alternative arrangements the labels L are omitted and the outer faces of each row of bags are interconnected by one or more elongated tapes. Fig. 8 shows a chain of bags 210 connected end-to-end by transverse adhesive-coated strips 211 which may be cut centrally after the filling operation to seal the mouth of one bag and reinforce the bottom of the preceding bag. The lower edge of each strip may have an area free from adhesive to allow a portion 215 extending wholly or partly along the strip to be bent outwardly to engage a support member. In an alternative arrangement the bags may be connected directly back-to-back in pairs, the pairs being connected end-to-end by strips running longitudinally of the bags on their outer faces and adhered thereto so that they may be peeled off as each pair is opened and filled. In a further arrangement the bags may have mouth flaps whereby the end-to-end chain may be formed, and two such chains may be arranged with the bags back-toback in pairs, the bags of each pair being spacedly connected by Z-shaped support-engaging strips. Fig. 12 shows a chain of bags 410 having out-folded sides which are interconnected by adhesive-coated zigzag tapes 413, 414 arranged so that tension applied thereto causes the bags to open as they approach the filling point, the tapes being peeled from the bags after filling. The arrangement may be applied to bags.with infolded gusset sides, and also to bags having thermoplastic linings. The bags may be spaced in the chain and the tapes arranged to project above the bag mouths so that severing of the tapes intermediate the bags will leave each bag with mouth-sealing tapes. In alternative arrangements bags may be connected with their plain faces adjacent each other by transverse strips bent to inverted V form. Fig. 19 shows a pair of gusseted bags 621, each having the gusset walls 620<SP>1</SP> provided with a connecting tab 624. For chain formation the tab may extend beyond both gusset walls 620, 620<SP>1</SP> on each side of the bag as in Fig. 21. Various arrangements of the adhesive coatings on the tabs are described whereby they may be used for subsequent sealing of the bags after filling. Fig. 25 shows a tabbed and gusseted bag having a reinforcing strip 630 stuck to the inside of the bag mouth, the strip 630 having its lower inwardly facing surface adhesive-coated so that sealing of the bag mouth thereby will leave the upper edge of the mouth free to facilitate subsequent opening. In making such bags from a single web or seamless tube the tabs and strips may be secured in position before the gusset folds are made. For square-bottomed bags as in Fig. 31 tabs 623 and 623a may be arranged on the gusset walls at the top and bottom respectively of the bag so that tension applied to a chain of such bags will cause complete opening of the bag throughout its length. In a further arrangement a chain of gusseted bags may be formed by sticking together adhesivecoated tabs struck from the material of one or both gusset walls on each side of the bag. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, comprises also arrangements of bags in pairs or chains by means of integral connections therebetween or by means of adhesive coatings directly on integral parts of the bags near their mouths. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
