Abstract

Ingrain or melange effects are obtained in wool by dyeing or printing with a solution or paste containing (a) a condensation product of an aldehyde with an aromatic sulphonic acid or salt thereof, a water-soluble urea-formaldehyde condensation product, a water-soluble melamine-formaldehyde condensation product, a tannin, or an aromatic sulphonic acid containing at least three sulphonic acid groups or a water-soluble salt thereof; (b) acetic, hydrochloric, sulphuric, formic, phosphoric or lactic acid or an ammonium salt thereof; and (c) at least one dyestuff which will dye wool and contains at least two sulphonic acid groups; which solution or paste, during at least a part of the treatment has a pH below 5.5 when acids are used and below 6.2 when ammonium salts are present, and the proportion of substance (b) to substance (a) is not less than 0.2 : 1 by weight. In modifications, substances (a) and (b) may be applied, separately or together, before (c); substances (b) and (c) are applied together after (a); and substances (a) and (c) are applied together after (b). The wool may also be treated with formaldehyde before or during the treatment with substance (a). Examples of condensation products of an aldehyde and an aromatic sulphonic acid are those of the general formula R-(CH2)n-R, where n is preferably 1 or 2 and R is an aryl radical containing at least one sulphonic group and if desired also an amino, hydroxyl, nitro, chloro or thiol substituent. Suitable aromatic sulphonic acids containing at least three sulphonic acid groups are naphthalene trisulphonic acids and trisulphonic acids of monohydric, dihydric and trihydric phenols and alkyl-substituted phenols. Any acid, neutral, direct, pre-metallized, chrome or fluorescent dye which will dye wool and contains at least two sulphonic acid groups may be used. Two or more colour effects may be obtained by employing two or more dyestuffs, some of which may be free from, or contain only one sulphonic group. Dyestuffs having two or more sulphonic groups dye the wool in darker flecks on a lighter ground, and if a mixture containing a dye with one sulphonic group and a dye with two or more sulphonic groups is used, the former dyes the lighter parts of the wool and slightly stains the fleck part, thereby giving contrasting colours. The wool may be admixed with other fibres. Many examples are given illustrating the use of cresol sulphonic acid-formaldehyde condensation product, ureaformaldehyde syrup, naphthalene trisulphonic acid, naphthalene-formaldehyde sulphonic acid, dinaphthylmethane-disulphonic acid, retene-formaldehyde condensation products, 2-naphthol-3,6-disulphonic acid and formaldehyde, melamine-formaldehyde condensation product, a condensation product of polyhydric phenols and aromatic sulphonic acid, and tannic acid as substance (a); acetic, phosphoric, sulphuric, formic and lactic acids and mono-ammonium phosphate as substance (b); and various chrome and acid dyes as substance (c).
