Abstract
680,828. Moulding tubular articles from thermoplastic or thermosetting materials. DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd., GOULDING, G. H. Jan. 17, 1951 [Jan. 28, 1950], No. 2282/50. Class 87 (ii). Tubular articles, e.g. rubber suspension units for motor-cycles, are moulded around a mandrel 7 supported in a mould both at its ends and between its ends, the intermediate supports being withdrawn before the moulded material sets. The mandrel 7, surrounded by an extruded tube of unvulcanized rubber, is laid in slots 6 in the lower force 2 of the mould and pressed down until the notched intermediate supports 10 sink into the uncured rubber and encounter the mandrel. The top force is located by means of dowels 4 and the mould heated in a press. After a slight delay, handle 14 is turned to rotate cams 15 and withdraw the supports 10. The rubber flows into the spaces left by the supports and the vulcanization is then completed. Pressure is then relieved and the mandrel withdrawn by pulling on the eye 8 before the mould is opened. The bottom force of the mould is provided with spew grooves 16, 18 and the top force is rebated at 19 to provide purchase for a pinch-bar when opening the mould. The method may be carried out by transfer moulding.
