Abstract
<PICT:0680821/III/1> In the synthesis of hydrocarbons and oxygen-containing derivatives thereof by the hydrogenation of carbon monoxide in a catalytic converter, the catalyst is indirectly cooled in sections by the evaporation of a liquid, e.g. water, each section being cooled independently of the other sections and the cooling of the sections being controlled to maintain a catalyst temperature which increases in the direction of flow of the synthesis gas through the converter. The process is applicable for use with multiple or multi-tubular catalytic converters. As applied to the multiplate converter, the catalyst is disposed between plates 2, gaseous reactants entering the converter at 3 and reaction products being withdrawn at 4. The catalyst is cooled along its length to ensure a rise in temperature in the direction of gas flow, by three banks 5, 6, 7 of cooling tubes containing water, each bank being self-contained and connected to a steam drum 8, 9, 10. Each drum is connected through a reducing valve 11 to a common pipe through which steam is withdrawn, the valves serving to control the pressure and hence the temperature in each bank of tubes so as to ensure that the catalyst temperature rises in the direction of gas flow. When several converters are grouped together in parallel, the bank of cooling tubes serving corresponding zones of each converter are connected to the same steam generator.
