680,659. Animal stocks. ANDERSON, C. S. Nov. 20, 1950 [March 21, 1950], No. 7094/50. Class 81 (ii). An appliance for gripping an animal comprises an opening formed by two divergent sides of a frame through which the head can project and a spring-loaded arm movable across the opening to grip the neck between itself and the side of the opening. A releasable locking device is provided to hold the arm in the gripping position. In the case of a cattle marking gate an arm 9 pivoted at 20 is normally held in the open position by a spring 10, to allow the animal's head to protrude through the resultant opening, but can be pulled across, to grip the neck, by a cable 11 attached to its upper end. When it reaches the upright position, shown in full, a latch 16 is lowered to retain it, this being raised, when required, by a second cable 18. In the open position, the taut wire 11 passes under the latch 16 and holds it raised, so that it falls automatically when the gripping arm 9 is actuated. In order to accommodate smaller animals a distance piece 23 is removable attached to the side of the opening.
