Abstract

Polymers of normally gaseous olefins are produced by passing a preheated olefin charge through catalyst consisting of a film of phosphoric acid adsorbed on a non-porous inert support under polymerizing conditions, and <PICT:0680605/IV (b)/1> introducing an olefin charge having a lower temperature in controlled amounts at a plurality of intermediate positions within the catalyst zone to control the reaction temperature. The heated feed is introduced at about 250-400 DEG F. and upwards of 150 p.s.i. The catalyst temperature should not exceed 480 DEG F. The "cold" feed injection points are spaced to allow not more than 150 DEG F. rise between them. A single catalyst bed or spaced beds may be used. The depth of catalyst between injection points increases progressively throughout the reactor. Temperature controllers which automatically regulate the amount of cold feed may be located just before each injection point and the reactor outlet. Charge stocks of high olefine content, up to 49 per cent for C3 and 82 for C4, may be employed. A C3-C4 feed is compressed to 200-1000, preferably 300 p.s.i., and fed partly via heat exchanger 2 and line 3 at about 300 DEG F. to reactor 4 containing, preferably, a film of phosphoric acid of at least 97, e.g. 103-106 per cent, on a support such as quartz chips of 28-35 mesh. The remainder of the feed is led by line 5 to injection lines 6-9 and distributers 10-13. Thermocouples 14-18 are connected to temperature controllers 19-23 which operate valves 24-28. Valve 24 is in by-pass line 29 which shunts the heater 2 as desired to maintain the desired temperature at 14.
