Abstract

680,539. Drills. WITTON-JAMES, Ltd., and SWINDLEHURST, A. July 4, 1950 [July 4, 1949], No. 17619/49. Class 83 (iii). A countersinking drill comprises a forward portion having oppositely disposed chip-clearing grooves, the junction edge between one groove and the forward portion providing a cutting edge, while the junction edge between the other groove and the forward portion provides an edge bounding a cone surface section concentric with the axis of the tool. The tool may comprise a tapered shank 12, Fig. 2, with a cutting head 13 having a conical point 14. Longitudinal flutes 15 are provided at 180 degrees and tangential to the point thus forming two edges a, c in the coned surface 14. The edge c is backed off to produce an effective cutting edge, but the edge a has only a guiding function. There may be only one flute or more than two. In a modification, the flutes may be of spiral form giving a tool similar in appearance to a twist drill, but having only one edge intended for cutting. The tool may have a straight shank.
