Abstract
680,294. Casting arched structures in situ. WALLER, J. H. DE W. Nov. 15,1950 [Nov. 17, 1949], No. 29462/49. Classes 20(ii) and 20(iv) An arched structure, the curve spanwise of which, as shown in Fig. 1, is inverted catenary and the cross section at right angles to the span as partly shown in Fig. 4 is a catenarian wave form, is cast in situ by applying concrete to permanent flexible shuttering 10 supported on arch reinforcement which is supported on a temporary gantry A from which it is severed when the concrete is set. In one method the gantry which is mounted on wheels at 3 comprises three arched girders A joined by transverse girders 2, each girder being at the crest of a wave of the arch cross-section. Reinforcement rods 5 for the trough of the waves are bent to catenarian form and suspended from hooks 9 on the gantries by means of intermediate tubes 8 and joined by reinforcing rods 6 for the wave crest. Reinforcing rods 7 are laid over and at right angles to these rods and follow the curve of the arch. When the concrete, which may be applied by a gun has set, the ends 5b of the trough rods 5 are severed and the gantry is moved on tracks 4b to cast the next section. The sections may be continuous or connected by expansion joints or arched roof lighting. The shuttering may be expanded metal, hessian or scrim. The arched structure may have end walls with doors or the springing on one side of the arch may be supported on a lintel supported by buttresses providing a wide entry along the side of the structure. The lintel may be of arch form and in one construction a number of arched lintels are supported on common buttresses and the outer ends of the end lintels are supported on longitudinally arranged buttresses. Each girder of the gantry A is formed of a number of segments joined end to end and the gantry is erected by assembling the first two segments of the three girders at the foot of the gantry with the corresponding transverse girders 2, raising the outer end by jacks or cranes and adding further segments and raising until the arch is complete. A travelling cradle shaped to the trough form is slung between the girders for the workmen and moved up as the work proceeds. Specification 545,334 is referred to.
