Abstract
680,178. Electrostatic machines. CENTRE NATIONAL DE LA RECHERCHE SCIENTIFIQUE. Nov. 1, 1950 [Nov. 9, 1949], No. 26676/50. Class 35. The output voltage of an electrostatic generator is made independent of the load current by connecting a non-linear leakage resistor between the separately excited inductor plates and the output terminal. The ratio B<SP>1</SP> between the current and voltage produced by the exciting source, and the magnitude Z of the leakage resistor, are chosen such that when the voltage across the resistor is near the sum of the output and excitation voltages, U and V respectively, its value is equal to - 1/B<SP>1</SP>, but greater, e.g. infinite for lower voltages. In the form shown, the main generator is of known form and comprises inductor plates 1 and screen plates 2 acting on charge-carrying plates 3, 4 mounted on shaft 5 and alternately connected through commutator segments 6, 7 and brushes 8, 9 to the earth 10 and the output terminal 11. The exciting unit comprises two mutually exciting auxiliary generators 20, 30, the output brush 29 of exciter 20 being connected to the inductor plates 1 at potential - V. The leakage resistor connecting the inductor plates to the output terminal to stabilize the output voltage in accordance with the invention, comprises an ordinary resistor 12 in series with a point-to-plane glow discharge device 13, 14 whose spacing is adjustable to vary the output voltage. In a modification in which the main generator is of the double transfer type, such as is described in Specification 643,660, the screen plates 2 are charged at a potential U+V from the output of one of the exciting generators whose other terminal is earthed. The terminals of the other generator are connected to the inductor and output terminal of the main machine. Both exciters thus generate a voltage U+V, instead of V as in the form shown, and an additional leakage resistor is required between the screen plates and earth, as well as between the inductor and output terminal of the main machine as before. When the output voltage is very high the leakage resistor may be connected to the terminal through a potential divider.
