Abstract

680,002. Magnetic induction accelerators. METROPOLLTAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. March 20, 1950 [April 4, 1949], No. 9125/49. Class 39(i) In a betatron which has the inner surface of the accelerating chamber coated with a layer of silver, graphite or other suitable conductive material, the layer is biased negatively with respect to the anode of the injector. This is in order to obtain such a contraction of the orbital radius of the electrons after injection as to ensure that they do not hit the injector after completing a revolution in the chamber. The phase of the injector pulses is advanced with respect to the times of zero magnetic flux in such manner as to oppose the tendency of the electrons to oscillate in the region of the injector due to the strong field there. A prior proposal for contracting the orbit in which energy is abstracted from the electron beam by passing a rapidly changing current through conductors placed above and below the beam orbit, is referred to.
