Abstract

678,547. Welding by pressure. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Jan. 5, 1951 [Jan. 10, 1950], No. 432/51. Class 83 (iv). A method of electric arc-welding of barshaped metal work-pieces, e.g. bolts, is characterized in that use is made of a member having an aperture the wall of which acts as a protective member for linking the parts of a slagforming body arranged in the aperture to surround the bar end to be welded, the body being deformed during the welding operation. A bolt 1 is gripped in a holder 2 by a lug 3 on a disc 4 provided with a spring-loaded arm 5. The holder 2 has an extension 7 for holding a slag-forming body 8 against a plate 9. An ignition agent 10 is placed between the bolt and the plate for striking the arc. The holder 2 is secured to a tube 11 which is surrounded by a spring 13, one end of which engages a shoulder 12 on the tube 11 and the other end a ring 14 on the frame 15 of the welding device. Flexible supply wires 17 are connected to the tube 11 by a clip 16 and the supply of current is controlled by a knob 19 on a handle 18. The frame 15 has three holders 20 arranged around the frame, each carrying a support 22 to which a member 23 having a circular aperture 25 is secured. In operation, when the electric current is switched on the ignition agent melts, the ends of the slagforming body melt and form a protective slag layer 27 around the molten metal 28. The wall 29 of the aperture 25 of the member 23 arrests the molten slag and also the ends 26 of the staves 30 formed due to the splitting of the slagforming body. The member 23 may be made of copper and the diameter of the aperture 25 exceeds the outer diameter of the slag-forming body by about 50 per cent. The axial dimension of the member 23 is at least 20 per cent of the outer diameter of the slag-forming body.
