Abstract

The invention comprises dyes of the formula <FORM:0678525/IV (c)/1> wherein R is hydrogen, alkyl or the radical <FORM:0678525/IV (c)/2> each X is hydrogen or sulpho, and Y and Z each represent hydrogen or NH.R. These dyes are made by condensing a nuclearly halogenated durene with a 1-amino-4-amino- or alkylaminoanthraquinone, which may contain amino or alkylamino groups in 5- and 8-positions, preferably in a solvent in presence of the usual copper-containing catalysts and acid-binding agents (e.g. ammonium and alkali metal acetates, carbonates and bicarbonates, and nitrogen containing bases such as urea). A leuco-anthraquinone may be used with subsequent oxidation, e.g. with nitrobenzene, a peroxide, or a perborate. The products may be sulphonated. In examples, monobromodurene is condensed with the following, followed by sulphonation: (1) 1,4-diaminoanthraquinone, (2) leuco-1,4-diaminoanthraquinone, (3) 1-methylamino-4-amino-anthraquinone, (4) 1,4,5,8-tetra-aminoanthraquinone. Other anthraquinone starting materials specified are 1-amylamino- or isopropylamino- 4-amino-anthraquinone, 1,4,5-triaminoanthraquinone, 1,4-dimethylamino-5,8-diaminoanthraquinone. The sulphonated products are soluble in water and dye wool blue to blue-green shades; the unsulphonated products are soluble in organic solvents and colour plastics and lacquers, e.g. cellulose acetate.
