Abstract
678,511. Cooling resistances; variablecontact resistances. BRITISH ELECTRIC RESISTANCE CO., Ltd., and NEWNHAM, L. A. June 12, 1950 [March 11, 1949], No. 6676/49. Class 37. A resistance element is mounted in a metalwalled housing which is adapted to be sealed and a very thin packing of electrically insulating material is arranged between the element and the wall of the housing and in close contact therewith so that heat generated in the element passes freely to the wall of the housing, by which it is dissipated. The housing 12 has a cylindrical wall 13 which is inclined outwards at 14 and terminates in an annular collar 15. The bottom 16 is formed with an annular recess 17 having a central aperture. Within the housing 12 is a moulding 18 of insulating plastic or ceramic material which has a recess 21 in its outer surface extending round the major part of the periphery. A spindle 22 rotatable within a sleeve 23 has an insulating member 24 moulded on to its upper end. The sleeve 23 is formed with an annular projection 26 fitting into the recess 17 and is threaded at each end to take locking-nuts 27, 28. A spring washer 29 is fitted between the member 24 and the end of the sleeve 23. In contact with the internal surface of the cylindrical wall 13 are mica strips 33, between which and the moulding 18 is wedged an arcuate strip 34 of resistance material, its lower portion being housed in the recess 21. The member 24 has secured to it by screws 32 a sliding contact 30 and a spring contact 31 made from a single piece of resilient phosphor bronze. A cap 41 is fitted over the housing 12 and spun down against the inclined portion 14, a rubber gasket 40 forming a hermetic seal. The cap carries three terminals, each of which comprises a screwed metal stud 44 passing through a rubber insulator 45, a conical insulator 46, and a ceramic disc 47. Each stud is held in position by a nut 48 under which is a terminal tag 49. The spring contact 31 engages the centre stud 44, the other studs being connected to the ends of the resistor by leads 36. The outer surface of the housing may have a matt surface, corrugations, or fins for dissipating heat.
