Class 46 In presses of the kind in which the threads of a pair of screws intermesh with considerable lateral clearance between their threads relative to the thickness of the latter and the core and thread diameters vary relatively so that the volumetric capacity of the space between adjacent turns of the thread of each screw decreases from the inlet to the outlet, the threads and cores are substantially in peripheral contact, throughout the operative length of the screws. In Fig. 1, the screw axes are parallel while the thread diameters 7, 8 decrease towards the outlet 6 and the core diameters 3, 4 increase. In Fig. 2 the cores are cylindrical while their axes are inclined at a small angle towards the outlet. The thread diameters decrease as before. In Fig. 3 both core and thread diameters decrease towards the outlet the screw axes again being inclined. In all cases the pitch preferably decreases towards the outlet, the last one or two threads having a greatly decreased pitch. Where the screw axes are parallel short cylindrical-thread screws, or screw portions with cylindrical cores, may be incorporated at the inlet or outlet end or both. A portion of each of the screws next to the outlet may be formed as a removable and suitably tubular end piece, preferably cylindrical. End pieces with different thread pitches may thus be inserted so that the pressure gradient near the outlet may be readily altered to accommodate different raw materials.
