Abstract

677,683. Microscopes. WEISKOPF, E. C., and WHITEHEAD, E. C., (trading as TECHNICON CO.). Aug. 4, 1950 [Aug. 9, 1949], No. 19575/50. Class 97 (i). [Also in Group XI] In a unitary microscope-support and lamp, including an optical system for projecting the light towards the microscope, a base is provided having a part on which the lamp is mounted and a part on which to mount the microscope, the said base being pivoted about a horizontal axis on a part of the support to enable lamp and microscope to be tilted without changing their relative positions. As shown, the support comprises a base 10 carrying a lamp house 12 and light directing housing 18 over the exit aperture of which a microscope may be clamped by fixed clamps 220 (one only is shown) and a clamp 194 adjustable in a slot 198 in the base 10. The base is pivoted at one end to a plate 32 having pegs 38 engaged by a bracket 42 pivoted to the base 10 to hold the latter in a desired tilted position. The lamp house 12 contains an iris diaphragm 158 the operating member 166 of which projects through the casing, a condenser lens 114 in a cylinder 116 axially movable by a rack 124 engaging a pinion 126 operated by a knob external to the casing, and an electric lamp 98. The latter is carried by a holder 76 attached to a spherical base 70 which is supported in a seating 68 in a member 64 rotatably supported by the housing and is pressed by a spring 80 against a screw 78. Attached to the ball 70 is a rod 72 pressed by a spring 82 against inclined adjusting screws 90, Fig. 6, projecting from the member 64. By adjustment of the screws 90 the lamp filament F may be moved in any direction transverse of the optical axis. Light from the lamp passes through the housing 18 and is directed upwards into the microscope by a mirror 178. Slots 172 are provided in the housing 18 to receive colour filters and a supplementary diverging condenser lens 184, Fig. 2, pivoted at 186 to the housing 18 may be swung into the illuminating beam.
