Abstract
Polyisobutylene having a molecular weight above 10,000 and preferably between 10,000 and 20,000 is prepared by treating a light cracked petroleum fraction consisting of hydrocarbons having four carbon atoms in the molecule, and containing isobutylene together with substantial amounts of butene-1 and butene-2, to remove sufficient butene-2 that the ratio of secondary olefin to isobutylene is not substantially greater than 1 : 1 and the butene-2 content of the resulting product is not more than 20 per cent of the butene-1 content, and polymerizing the treated fraction at a temperature below 0 DEG C. in the presence of a halide polymerization catalyst, preferably boron fluoride or aluminium chloride. The butene-2 is preferably removed by fractionating the mixture to remove 50-90 per cent of the fraction overhead and using this overhead fraction for the polymerization. 5 per cent of substantially pure isobutylene may be added to the overhead fraction before polymerization, and about 0.1 per cent diethyl ether may also be added to increase the molecular weight. The polymers may be added to lubricating oils as viscosity improvers.
