Abstract

In polymerizing normally gaseous olefins with concentrated liquid phosphoric acid in a polymerization zone presenting acid-resistant metallic surfaces, corrosion thereof is decreased by maintaining the concentration of phosphoric acid esters of olefins in the reaction mixture below 0.08 mol. per mol. of free phosphoric acid. Ethylene, propylene, and butylenes may be polymerized with phosphoric acid of above about 90 per cent, calculated as ortho acid, at 150-450 DEG F., above 100 p.s.i.g., and space velocities above 0.5 vol. liquid olefin/vol. catalyst/hour. Ester concentration gradually increases to an equilibrium value. The mixture of acid and hydrocarbons leaving the reactor is stratified, the hydrocarbon being neutralized and utilized for motor fuel while the acid layer is recycled after part thereof is heated to about 500 DEG F., if desired at atmospheric or lower pressure, to decompose contained esters. Ester concentration may also be controlled by reducing the olefin feed rate which is ordinarily 0.5-20 v./v./hour, to a figure within this range to bring the concentration below 0.08 mol./mol. acid. Alternatively, or additionally, temperature may be raised to decrease the ester concentration. The relation between ester concentration and corrosion rates of silver and a high nickel, molybdenum, iron alloy is illustrated using an initial acid of 103 per cent, calculated as orthophosphoric, and temperature of 300 DEG F., with a feed containing 28-45 per cent propylene. Corrosion rates of high chrome-nickel austenitic alloys and copper are also given.
