Abstract

677,086. Pesticidal gel. OSMOSE WOOD PRESERVING CO. OF AMERICA, Inc. Oct. 28, 1949 [Jan. 11, 1949], No. 27744/49. Class 81 (i). [Also in Group VIII] A thixotropic composition for preserving wood comprises a non-aqueous gel structure composed of a crude liquid hydrocarbon or a mixture of crude liquid hydrocarbons at least a portion of which is volatile and a gel forming agent selected from the saturated and unsaturated fatty acids which contain from 8 to 18 carbon atoms and the metal salts of such acids, said gel structure having dispersed therein a finely divided, stable, water-soluble mycocide wood preservative and a solid, inert filler material. The composition may be applied by brushing or spraying to decorticated green wood or to seasoned wood which has been moistened to allow osmotic diffusion. The hydrocarbon or mixture of hydrocarbons may be liquid coal tar fractions, petroleum and petroleum fractions which are liquid, petroleum naphtha, or a semi solid pitch, bitumen asphalt or coal tar pitch which is rendered fluid by heating or by diluting with coal tar or petroleum naphtha. The dispersed phase may be the aluminium, magnesium or zinc salt of stearic, oleic or lauric acid. The dispersed phase and the dispersion medium are selected so that they are miscible above 20‹ C., but have only a limited solubility at room temperature, and the amount of the dispersed phase should be such that its solubility in the dispersion medium is exceeded at room temperature, whereupon the dispersed material is thrown out in the form of fine particles resulting in a thixotropic gel. The mycocide composition may be inorganic such as the soluble fluorides of sodium, potassium and ammonium, zinc chloride, copper sulphate, mercuric chloride, the soluble arsenates, chromates, bichromates, chromated zinc chloride or zinc silicofluoride in addition to, or in lieu of which there may be used dinitrophenol, dinitrocresol, trinitrophenol or parachorphenol. The insoluble fibres may be rayon, wood or cotton fibres, asbestos fibres, mineral wool or glass fibre waste and should be very short, e.g. below # inch. Inert fillers such as bentonite clay, diatomaceous earth, coal dust or sand may be added.
